On September 14, 2008, David Price made his Major League debut for the Rays against the New York Yankees. The 2007 No. 1 overall draft pick entered the game in relief of Edwin Jackson and delivered an impressive performance. Price worked 5⅓ innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out four, including Alex Rodriguez and Jason Giambi.
Price had spent the 2008 season climbing through three levels of the Rays’ minor league system before receiving his call-up. His strong debut earned him a place in Tampa Bay’s postseason bullpen.
Just over a month later, Price was on the mound for the final out of the American League Championship Series, striking out J.D. Drew to send the Rays to their first World Series.
Not bad for a first trip to the big leagues.
