Looking for a little classic movie fright this Halloween? In 1948, Universal Pictures brought together three of Hollywood’s most famous monsters and one of comedy’s best-known duos in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.
Released June 15, 1948, the horror-comedy stars Bud Abbott and Lou Costello as Chick Young and Wilbur Grey, two baggage handlers who get an unusual assignment. They must deliver crates containing the bodies of Count Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster to McDougal’s House of Horrors. The trouble begins when Dracula revives and escapes with the monster, leaving Wilbur terrified and Chick convinced his partner is imagining things.
But Dracula has a frightening plan. With help from an accomplice, he intends to transplant Wilbur’s brain into Frankenstein’s monster. Their scheme becomes even more complicated when Lawrence Talbot, better known as the Wolf Man, appears and tries to convince the skeptical pair that the supernatural danger is real.
The film brings together three of Universal’s best-known horror characters: Bela Lugosi returns as Dracula, Glenn Strange plays Frankenstein’s monster, and Lon Chaney Jr. appears as the Wolf Man. The monsters play their roles seriously, while Abbott and Costello provide the laughs, creating a memorable blend of horror and comedy.
Although it was released more than seven decades ago, the film remains a Halloween favorite for fans who enjoy their scares with a little slapstick. Its reputation has endured beyond the holiday, too. In 2001, the Library of Congress selected Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein for the National Film Registry, recognizing its cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance.
This Halloween, remember that even classic movie monsters can share the screen with a little comedy. Just be careful about accepting any mysterious crates delivered to your door!
