Piers Through the Years
“Piers Through the Years” explored the evolution of one of St. Petersburg’s most iconic waterfront landmarks. The exhibit traced the history of the city’s piers, beginning with the late 19th-century railroad pier built by Peter Demens and continuing through successive generations of structures that shaped the city’s identity along Tampa Bay.
Through historic photographs, maps, and interpretive panels, the exhibit highlighted how the pier transitioned from an industrial hub for trade and transportation into a beloved civic gathering place for fishing, tourism, recreation, and entertainment. It also examined the changing architectural styles and community uses that reflected St. Petersburg’s growth from a small coastal town into a major Florida city.
The exhibit connected waterfront development to broader themes of civic planning, leisure culture, and the city’s long relationship with its shoreline.
