Happy Hour with the Historian – The Floridas Under Great Britain

A notable period in Florida’s history came after the French/Indian War. When the Floridas came under Great Britain’s rule, West & East Florida became England’s 14th & 15th American colonies. The addition of the Floridas meant England now had colonies from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.

Our September 10 Happy Hour with the Historian will dive into Florida’s history during England’s rule. We’ll share details often hidden from U.S. history books, like the fact that Florida remained loyal to Britain when the Revolution began.

Rodney Kite-Powell is the Director of the Touchton Map Library and Florida Center for Cartographic Education at the Tampa Bay History Center, where he joined the staff in 1995. He received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Florida and a Master of Arts from the University of South Florida—both in the subject of U.S. history. Born and raised in Tampa, Florida, he has written and lectured extensively on the history of Tampa, Hillsborough County, and Florida.
