Some baseball games test the limits of human endurance. On September 20, 2013, the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles played one of those games.
What began as a Friday night matchup at Tropicana Field stretched deep into the early morning hours. The teams battled through 18 innings, with neither side willing to give up an advantage. As the game wore on, managers turned to their bullpens, using pitcher after pitcher in an extraordinary display of endurance.
By the end of the marathon, 21 pitchers had taken the mound, setting a Major League Baseball record for the most pitchers used in a game at the time.
The deadlock finally ended in the bottom of the 18th inning, by then September 21. With one out, Desmond Jennings doubled to put the winning run in scoring position. David DeJesus followed with a walk-off single, sending Jennings home and giving the Rays a dramatic 5–4 victory.
The game lasted 6 hours and 54 minutes, making it one of the longest games in Rays history. For fans who stayed until the end, it was certainly a night to remember.
