Today, the 727 area code is instantly recognizable across Pinellas County, but it is a relatively recent addition to Florida’s history. On April 7, 1998, state regulators approved the creation of the 727 area code to serve most of Pinellas County and portions of western Pasco County, splitting the region from the longtime 813 area code.
The change was driven by rapid population growth, expanding businesses, and the increasing demand for telephone numbers during the late 1990s. As more residents, cell phones, fax machines, and internet services came online, the supply of available 813 numbers was quickly being exhausted.
The new area code officially took effect on July 1, 1998. For several months, residents could use either 813 or 727 while businesses and households updated stationery, advertisements, and contact information. The transition ended on February 1, 1999, when 727 became the region’s only area code.
Today, 727 is more than just three digits. It has become a symbol of home for generations of Tampa Bay residents.
