On July 20, 1969, millions of people around the world watched as Apollo 11 made history. After a four-day journey from Earth, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed the Lunar Module Eagle on the Moon while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard the Command Module Columbia.
A few hours later, Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface, famously declaring, “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” Aldrin soon joined him as the two astronauts conducted experiments, collected lunar samples, and planted the American flag before returning safely to Earth.
Florida played a central role in this achievement. Apollo 11 launched from Kennedy Space Center on July 16, making the Sunshine State the starting point for humanity’s first journey to another world. To commemorate that remarkable accomplishment, Florida later designated moonstone as the official state gem in 1970, even though moonstone is not naturally found in the state.
