On July 2, 2008, Tropicana Field hosted one of the most anticipated games in Tampa Bay Rays history as the Rays faced the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox. Just one year earlier, few could have imagined the match-up carrying such significance. By midsummer 2008, however, the Rays had transformed from perennial underdogs into legitimate contenders atop the American League East.

The nationally televised series drew attention from baseball fans across the country as Tampa Bay battled one of the sport’s most successful franchises for first place. Trailing late in the game, the Rays erupted for six runs in the seventh inning. Evan Longoria delivered the go-ahead double, while shortstop Jason Bartlett (pictured) added a clutch two-run single that helped secure a thrilling 7-6 victory.

The 2008 season proved to be a defining moment for the franchise. Led by a talented young roster, strong pitching, and timely hitting, the Rays finished with a club-record 97 wins before defeating the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox in the postseason to capture their first American League pennant. Their remarkable run forever changed baseball in Tampa Bay.
