Florida’s Got the Blues
Florida’s Got the Blues explored Florida’s deep and often overlooked blues tradition. The exhibit highlighted how the state helped shape the development of blues music, from early regional styles to later influences on rhythm and blues and popular music.
Through photographs, recordings, interpretive panels, and cultural artifacts, the exhibition examined themes such as early blues pioneers, jook joints and blues clubs, Depression-era music, WPA recordings, and the evolution of contemporary blues. It also highlighted Florida artists whose work reached national audiences, including figures such as Tampa Red and Blind Blake, who are closely associated with the state’s musical heritage.
Florida’s Got the Blues connected these musical stories to broader cultural history, showing how blues music reflected lived experience, migration, and change across Florida communities. The exhibition helped illustrate the state’s important role in shaping American music history through both local expression and national influence.
